How Long Does a Tattoo Actually Take? (Longer Than Most People Think)

One of the Most Common Questions We Hear

“How long will this take?”

And honestly — the answer is almost never as quick as people expect.

Because tattooing isn’t just the tattoo itself. A session includes multiple steps before the machine even touches your skin.

Step 1: The Consultation

Before anything starts, we discuss:

• Your idea
• Placement
• Size
• Style
• Adjustments to make the design work better

Even simple tattoos need planning. This part matters more than people realise.

Step 2: Design & Preparation

Once the concept is clear, the setup begins.

That includes:
• Finalising the design
• Printing stencils
• Prepping the station
• Setting up sterile equipment

This takes time — and it should.

Step 3: Placement Is a Process

A tattoo can look completely different depending on where it sits.

That’s why stencil placement often takes longer than expected. We adjust angles, positioning, size, and flow until it feels right on your body — not just on paper.

Sometimes this takes 5 minutes.
Sometimes it takes 30.

And that’s normal.

Step 4: The Tattoo Itself

The actual tattoo time depends on:

• Size
• Placement
• Detail
• Style
• Your comfort level

For example:
• Small fine line tattoos can take under an hour
• Medium detailed pieces may take 2–4 hours
• Larger work can take multiple sessions

And yes — breaks are part of the process too.

Why Good Tattoos Aren’t Rushed

Fast doesn’t always mean better.

Tattooing requires precision, especially with:
• Fine lines
• Symmetry
• Shading
• Detailed custom work

Rushing usually shows in the final result.

From My Chair at Morphology

I’d rather take extra time and do it properly than rush through something permanent.

Because once the tattoo heals, what matters isn’t how fast it was done — it’s how well it was done.

Final Thought

A tattoo session is slower than most people expect.
But that’s part of what makes it meaningful.

You’re not just getting inked.
You’re going through a process — one that stays with you long after the appointment ends.
